More surprises uncovered in the Baviaanskloof

Baviaanskloof (SA): Evidence of wetlands have been found in what is now regarded as the bone-dry Baviaanskloof. That was just one of the revelations from a multi-stakeholder field trip led by the PRESENCE network in western Baviaanskloof on the 4th and 5th November. The event brought together land owners, students, researchers and scientific experts and implementers in the field of wetland and river restoration.
Special thanks must go to visiting Wageningen University student Gloria De Paoli who assumed most of the responsibility in organising the workshop. “I think the field trip was a success” reflects Gloria. “Whilst things didn’t necessarily go as planned, the group was great and things then flowed by themselves. I was amazed how enthusiastic and interested participants were in going into the field and exploring the area. Everyone’s input was valuable - I hope it will lead to making [restoration] implementation happen.”  Gloria is currently undertaking her internship and thesis research as part of the Dutch Ministry’s Water for Food and Ecosystem programme and is facilitated by EarthCollective through the PRESENCE network.  We also acknowledge the valuable input from Japie Buckle (Working for Wetlands, SANBI) whose discovery of the former large wetland (pictured) during the field trip led to the news being picked up by the South African national newspaper “Die Burger” (in Afrikaans).

Synergies for restoration in the BMR

Port Elizabeth (SA): The Baviaanskloof Mega-Reserve (BMR) is attracting increasing attention from all directions. Landscape restoration interests are no expception. EarthCollective, as initiators and ‘process enablers’ for the PRESENCE network, organised a successful workshop gathering for researchers, implementing organisations and Government programmes currently active with restoration activities in the BMR. The overall objectives of the day-long workshop was to identify: the active and proposed projects in the area; the research and implementation gaps; the opportunities for collaboration between the different projects in order to optimise potential synergies; and to agree on roles and responsibilities for implementing a coordinated strategy for restoration-related activities in the BMR. An underlying vision was to determine the potential and capacity of PRESENCE to bring these diverse elements together and evolve into a so-called ‘learning organisation’. Participating organisations included…

Shaping the future: PRESENCE

Global: PRESENCE is featured in the latest issue of IUCN’s World Conservation Magazine. The special 60th anniversary issue features a section titled ‘Shaping the future’ which showcases 60 things that are changing conservation. IUCN asked its global network of experts about the issues and approaches that will influence the environment in the next 60 years. In the article titled, ‘Making their presence felt’, IUCN Commission on Ecosystem Management member Dr. Rudolf de Groot says, “In adopting the ecosystem approach, PRESENCE is adapting and responding to stakeholder preferences; implementer’s needs and constraints, and improved scientific understanding.” The piece also highlights how North-South collaboration is catalysing efforts to reverse the ecological degradation of one of South Africa’s ecological jewels – the subtropical thicket biome. The article acknolwedges EarthCollective’s efforts in initiating PRESENCE to help reverse the transformation of ecosystems which compromises biodiversity and ultimately the well-being of local cmmunities.

Diverse week at the WCC

Barcelona (ES): A number of the EarthCollective team have returned from a successful trip to the IUCN World Conservation Congress held between the 5th - 14th October in Barcelona, Spain. The three major EarthCollective initiatives were represented -  CVNI; eyes4earth & PRESENCE by Bas Verschuuren, Matthew Zylstra and Dieter Van den Broeck respectively. Each were involved in delivering a number presentations during workshops or assisting and chairing workshops with related themes.  Such themes included: Indigenous Dialogues, Mapping & Guidelines related to Sacred Natural Sites; Saving Spiritual Capital; Valuing, Mapping & Marketing Ecosystem Services; and Restoring Landscapes & ‘Natural Capital’.  EarthCollective also took advantage to participate in a number of “Learning Opportunities” such as Community Mapping & Participatory Video and a Google Earth workshop. Naturally, there were plenty of opportunities to network, exchange ideas, share experiences, catch-up with old acquaintances as well as make new friends.  Thanks must go to IUCN for organising a diverse and inspiring congress.

The people, the land and the spirit: SNS guidelines

Source: IUCN Press Release (with assistance from Bas Verschuuren (CVNI), EarthCollective.  CVNI was also on-hand to help with organising the event and participating in the SNS launch ceremony with Dhimurru Rangers. Read the related CVNI news post dated 8th October 2008)

Barcelona (ES): New Sacred Natural Sites (SNS) guidelines for Protected Area Managers were launched today by IUCN and UNESCO during the biggest environmental meeting of the year, the World Conservation Congress in Barcelona.

Under the beat of Bilma clap sticks the park rangers of Dhimurru Indigenous Protected Area in Australia started off the evening event that gathered indigenous people from three different continents, IUCN’s and UNESCO’s experts and philathropists.

“These Sacred Natural Sites guidelines are breaking ground for the recognition and management of these places by protected area managers, as well as wider recognition of the importance of cultural and spiritual values in nature conservation” said Nik Lopoukhine, Chair of the World Commission of Protected Areas. “The relationship between people and place is critical to ensuring that sacred places are protected, not only today or tomorrow but forever”.

No hibernation this winter

Eastern Cape (SA): It has been an active South African winter for members of the EarthCollective team involved in PRESENCE. Starting in early July, EarthCollective and partners TerraPi organised a dynamic few days of presentations and field trips for students from the United States who were visiting South Africa as part of their summer education programme. Students were introduced to invasive species clearing sites, vegetation rehabilitation programmes, innovative programmes for nature education through outdoor adventure, landscape restoration and the implications of the carbon market for activities on the ground, ecosystem services and our perceptions of the value of nature and an informative tour of the Kouga Dam kindly led by Leon.  In August…

Sacred Landscapes, Contesting Worldviews

“Landscapes are culture before they are nature; constructs of the imagination projected onto wood water and rock”. (Simon Schama 1995)

Wageningen (NL): People give meaning to the nature and landscapes around them. In most cultural traditions, this consideration of nature has given birth to an environmtal ethic where natue is seen as sacred - one of spiritual well-being and creation.
